Mumtaz “Taj” Mustapha, MD, FACP, FAAP is Chief Equity Strategy Officer at M Health Fairview and Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at University of Minnesota Medical School.

Dr. Mustapha received her AB from Stanford University, MD from the University of California San Francisco, and completed her combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency training at the University of Minnesota where she also served as a Chief Resident. Upon joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Dr. Mustapha was appointed as the Clerkship Director for Internal Medicine, and went on to become a Faculty Advisor, the Associate Program Director of the Combined Residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, the Director of Clinical Coaching, and the Lead for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Clinical Learning Environment.

A practicing hospitalist in both internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Mustapha’s research and educational interests include development of individual and programmatic assessments to promote inclusion, and development and implementation of theoretical frameworks and accompanying assessments to reduce health disparities and achieve health care equity.

Dr. Mustapha has presented internationally on the topic of bias in medical education, and trained hundreds of students, residents, faculty and staff on mitigation and intervention techniques for both interpersonal bias as well as bias in medical decision-making. Her teaching awards include: Educational Excellence Award for the Department of Medicine, Outstanding Faculty Educator Award for the Pediatrics residency, and Distinguished Mentoring Award for the University of Minnesota Medical School.
